What are affirmations?
Affirmations are short, positive statements written in the present tense, like “I am safe in this moment” or “I am allowed to start over.” Repeating them is a simple way to interrupt a negative thought loop and remind yourself of what you value and where you are going.
They work best when they feel believable. A gentle, grounded sentence you can accept will do more than a grand promise your mind argues with. That is why Shine’s affirmations are kind, specific and written for real moments: a stressful afternoon, a sleepless night, a first day, a hard week.
How to use daily affirmations
- Pick one affirmation for the day and read it slowly, two or three times.
- Say it out loud or write it down. Using more of your senses helps the words stick.
- Pair it with something you already do every day, like your morning coffee or your commute.
- Take a slow breath before and after, and notice how the words feel.
- If a sentence feels untrue, soften it: “I am learning to…” is often easier to believe than “I am…”.
What the research says
In psychology, self-affirmation usually means reflecting on the values that matter most to you, and it has been studied for decades.
A short self-affirmation exercise helped stressed students perform better on a demanding problem-solving task.
Creswell et al., PLoS ONE, 2013Brain imaging showed that self-affirmation activates regions linked to self-related thinking and reward.
Cascio et al., Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, 2016A meta-analysis found that self-affirmation can make people more open to health advice and more likely to change their behavior.
Epton et al., Health Psychology, 2015Repeating extreme statements you do not believe can backfire for people with low self-esteem, which is why believable affirmations matter.
Wood, Perunovic & Lee, Psychological Science, 2009
Affirmations are a self-care practice, not a treatment. If you are struggling, please talk to a doctor or a mental health professional.

Affirmations work best when they feel believable and become part of a routine. They are a self-care tool, not a replacement for professional help.
